Tips to Read In and Output Excel Spreadsheets in SAS

Abstract

Excel is widely used in clinical trials to save and transfer data, and analysis & reporting programmers routinely receive spreadsheets and produce customized Excel reports for other departments. This paper collects practical techniques for reading different Excel formats (xls, xlsx, xlsm, xlsb, csv) into SAS via LIBNAME engines and PROC IMPORT — including how to choose between them by environment and format — and for writing well-formatted outputs with PROC EXPORT and ODS EXCEL. It offers practical decision tips for choosing import/export methods and output formats.
